Icons are small paintings or plaques of Jesus, the Madonna or one of the Saints & were used to focus devotion & prayer.  they are said to be a direct mystical manifestation of The Holy Spirit & not the product of the hand of 'Man'.  They were appealed to for personal protection & help at times of crises etc.
